- During the First World War, the 1828 Rinkenbach organ of the village church in Gunsbach was badly damaged. This instrument, with one manual and 12 stops, was the organ on which Albert Schweitzer received his first organ lessons from his father. In collaboration with the organ builder Frédéric Haerpfer, Schweitzer designed a new organ for the church corresponded with his ideals. It was dedicated on May 3, 1931. The instrument was built with pneumatic action and cone chests. Parts of the Rinckenbach organ case were reused.
- But during the Second World War, the church damaged again, and the organ had to be repaired. This was done in 1945 by the company Mühleisen. In 1954 Alfred Kern replaced the Dulciana 8' of the Schwellwerk by a Prestant 4', at the request of Albert Schweitzer himself.
- The organ slowly but surely deteriorated after this, and especially the mechanics were in bad shape. Because the ideas about the ideal stop list of an organ had also changed considerably since its construction, it was decided to completely rebuild the organ. The initiative was taken by Schweitzer, who was now 85 years old. Various ranks were donated by European organ builders: from the Haupwerk the Flûte Conique 8' is a gift from the Ott company and the Flûte à Fuseau 4' from the Flentrop company, the Waltflöte 2' from the Schwellwerk is a gift from the Åkermann & Lund company and the Principal 4' of the Pedal is a personal gift from Dr. Bengt Andreas. Two years after commissioning, Kern added a Fourniture and a Dulcian 16' to the Pedal.
- The organ was completely overhauled in 1993. During this work, the composition of the Pedal-Fourniture was modified and a Trompette 8' was added to the Pedal.
