William Allen Johnson werd in 1816 geboren in Nassau, New York. In 1819-1820 verhuisde zijn familie naar Hawley in Massachusetts. In 1843 hielp hij bij de bouw van een orgel van Hook, waarna hij zich ging specialiseren in de orgelbouw. Hij werkte vanuit Westfield, Massachusetts. Na enkele tegenslagen stichtte hij in 1871 de Johnson Organ Company. William A. Johnson overleed op 20 januari 1901. Zijn zoon en opvolger William H. Johnson overleed op 20 april 1922. Daarmee kwam een einde aan het bedrijf.
