  • In 1994, Kenneth Jones built a new three-manual organ for Saint Michael's Church in Charleston, South Carolina. It has forty voices, five of which are transmissions. The case of the main organ, with Great and Choir, is taken from the church's first organ. This was built by John Snetzler in 1767. It is one of the oldest organ cases in the United States. The organ was dedicated on June 5, 1994. The official inauguration concert was on September 24, 1994.
  • Snetzler's organ had three manuals and 21 registers. In 1816 William Goodrich made repairs. The instrument had no pedal, so Henry Erben expanded it in 1834 with a one-octave pedal, to give more ground to the organ sound. In 1859 the instrument was expanded with a few stops. During the Civil War, the church was closed for several years, and the organ was dismantled and put into storage. It was overhauled by John Baker after re-installation in 1871.
  • The earthquake in August 1886 damaged the organ. It was repaired, but the church board wanted a more modern organ. On the advice of experts, it was decided no longer to continue with the old organ, but to have a new instrument built. The Austin Organ Company built this instrument as opus 308 in 1910-1911, retaining Snetzler's front. In 1939-1940 the organ was renovated and expanded by Austin.
