In 1862 Father Henry Willis built an organ for an exhibition in London, which was subsequently placed in the church of Saint Mary in Reading. The instrument was expanded by Willis in 1876 with a Solo Organ. In 1926 the organ was rebuilt by Bishop & Son. This was not a great success, and in 1936 Willis completely rebuilt the organ with electric action, a new console and a modified disposition. The console was placed in the Lady Chapel, separate from the organ.
