The Town Hall in Portsmouth was built in 1886-1890 to a design by William Hill. The Gray & Davison firm built an organ for the great hall in 1889. In 1922 the organ was rebuilt by James J. Binns & Co. The building was renamed Guildhall in 1926. The old building was demolished in 1959, except for the facades and the tower, and a modern concert hall has been built behind the old facade. The old organ has been demolished. An electronic Compton organ was installed in the new Guildhall.
