Removed from the church (2005)

  • In 1891, Felix F. Schoenstein built an organ for Saint Mark's Lutheran Church in San Francisco. It is one of the few original organs of the Felix Schoenstein still in existence. The church narrowly escaped the conflagration that, as a result of the great earthquake in 1906, reduced a large part of the city to ashes. The organ was transferred to the Church of the S.S. Peter and Paul, San Francisco North Beach, after remodeling and electrification. New organ cases have also been manufactured. In 1986-1987 the Schoenstein Organ Company built a new organ for this church. The cases of the old organ were reused, but the interior was removed. This was subsequently rebuilt in Saint Mark's.
  • The organ was no longer placed in Saint Mark's because the restoration was too expensive. It then went into storage. In 2020 it was put up for sale by the Organ Clearing House.
