  • In 1845, Henry Erben built an organ for the French Church in Charleston. The organ case was designed in the same neo-Gothic style as the chapel. After Charleston fell during the American Civil War, people wanted to disassemble the organ and transfer it to New York. This ultimately did not happen, so that the instrument still adorns the church. It temporarily was used in Grace Church until the spring of 1866.
  • The organ has been modified over time. John Baker worked on the instrument between 1859 and 1876, and placed a Bourdon 16' on the pedal. A revision was made in 1929 by John N. Reynolds. He replaced the Trumpet 8' with a Keraulophon 8'. He increased the compass of the pedal from 15 to 20 keys. A restoration was carried out in 1969 by the Hartman-Beaty Organ Company. They replaced the 1929 Keraulophon with a new Trumpet. On the second manual they placed a Bassoon 8', and the five highest pipes of the pedal were installed. In 1984 the pedal compass was changed again, now by James Polzois. He replaced the 20-key keyboard with a new 27-key one.
  • In 1997 the organ was restored by the Knowlton Organ Company. They returned to its original condition.
