John Baker was born in Bath, UK. He worked as an organ builder for William Gray. He emigrated to the United States in 1853, where he entered the service of Henry Erben. In 1854 he settled in Charleston, South Carolina as an independent organ builder. He died in early January 1882 in Charleston, where he was buried on January 18, 1882.
