  • The large church of Saint Matthew and Saint James on Rose Lane in Mossley Hill was designed by the architects Paley & Austin. They also designed the organ case of the Willis organ, built in 1874. The original instrument had mechanical action. An electric wind motor was installed in 1908. In 1937 the organ was completely rebuilt by the firm of Willis (Henry Willis III) to pneumatic action with a new console. The organ case was raised somewhat and the Choir Organ was enclosed in a swell box. Three years later the church was damaged by bombing, and the organ was dismantled an stored on a safe location.
  • After the war the church was restored and the organ could be re-installed in 1953, again by Willis. They enlarged the Choir Organ with a new Triangulaire 8'. In 1964 the pneumatic action was electrified by Willis. They also enlarged the Pedal Organ with a new Gedackt 8'. A restoration was carried out in 1981 by the firm of S. Reeves in Liverpool. They renewed the electropneumatic action and installed a second console in the nave of the church.
