- The Saint John's church building in Sorrento was built in several stages in the Gothic Revival style, after a design by George Morce. The nave was completed in 1874, the transepts in 1889 and the choir in 1911. The church contained a small organ, which was built around 1850. The origin and maker are unknown. It is thought to be a work of John Smith & Sons, who built two organs for W.G. Dredge and R. Smith at Saint Kilda. In 1894 the organ was installed in Saint Andrew's Church in Clifton Hill. It was put into service here on May 17, 1894.
- In 1924 Fincham & Sons transferred the organ to Sorrento. It was donated to the church by Clements Langford. Davis & Laurie restored the organ in 1964. R.J. Heatley worked on the organ in 1980. In 2019 the organ was replaced by another instrument, coming from Christchurch, New Zealand. The instrument was removed into storage by Hargraves Pipe Organs.
