- The organ in the Michaeliskirche in Buttstädt was built by Peter Herold in the years 1696-1700. However, the builder died before the instrument was completed. His master servant Johann Georg Fincke completed it in 1701. The organ was inspected by Johann Gottfried Walther. Johann Tobias Krebs, the father of the famous composer Johann Ludwig Krebs, was the organist of the church.
- Over time, the organ has been modified several times, at first in the years 1764-1766 by Johann Michael Hartung, who expanded the organ. A last restoration was carried out by Gerhard Kirchner in the years 1946-1949.
- In 1978 the organ was played for the last time by Horst Mey due to the temporary closure of the church. In 1990, the organ has been dismantled and stored, except for the organ case and the prospect pipes.
