The old organ of the cathedral in Soissons was originally built in 1619 by Crespin Carlier. Robert Clicquot rebuilt and expanded the organ in 1690. It took its final shape in 1766 after a major overhaul by François-Henri Clicquot. However, in the nineteenth century, the instrument did not escape major renovations. In 1892, the Merklin company completed a new organ, using some of the old pipework and the organ case. The organ was dedicated on January 19, 1893.
