  • The main organ of the cathedral in Le Mans was originally built in the years 1529-1535 by Pierre Bert. The organ case of this organ has been preserved, as well as part of the pipework. In 1634, the organ was extensively rebuilt by Jean and François de Héman, who expanded it to 42 stops. The classic Récit was enlarged in 1848 by the firm Claude Frères into a modern romantic Récit, and they also expanded the pedal position. The organ was expanded again in 1913. The specification was also modernized. The renewed organ had 52 stops and inaugurated with a concert by Louis Vierne.
  • The current instrument was created after a restoration and extension by Pierre Cheron (1959-1963) and Joseph Beuchet (1963-1974) in collaboration with the company Danion-Gonzalèz. It now has four manuals and pedal and 64 stops. In 1974 the organ was inaugurated with a concert by Gaston Litaize.
