The Cathedral of Saint Paul in Valletta was dedicated in November 1844. The organ in the church was constructed by the firm of Gray & Davison, but it was a much older organ, from Chester Cathedral in England. This instrument is said to have been built by Father Bernard Smith at the end of the seventeenth century, but it was probably not built until after Smith's death in 1708, which makes this reading impossible. In 1886, Gray & Davison converted the organ. In 1905 it was modernized by the Goll company. The current interior was placed in 1949 by the firm Hill, Norman & Beard in connection with a major renovation of the interior of the church. Pipework from the old organ was partly used during the construction, as well as the case.
