De kerk van Saint Clement Danes werd gebouwd naar ontwerp van Christopher Wren in 1682 op de plaats van een oudere kerk, die overigens niet verloren is gegaan door de stadsbrand van 1666, maar sterk in verval was geraakt. Voor de nieuwe kerk werd een drieklaviers orgel gebouwd door Father Smith. Het orgel is in de achttiende eeuw uitgebreid met een Trumpet op Great door George England. In de negentiende eeuw werd een zelfstandig pedaal toegevoegd door Roson en Walker verving de Mixture van Great door een Harmonic Flute. Het orgel bleef verder lange tijd in de vrijwel originele staat. In 1893 werd het echter herbouwd door Alfred Kirkland onder advies van E.J. Hopkins. Dit betekende een zeer ingrijpende vernieuwing. De orgelkas werd uitgebreid met twee torens met tussenvelden aan beide zijden. Kirkland maakte nieuwe klavieren en moderniseerde de dispositie. Naast het front van Schmidt is veel pijpwerk ook hergebruikt, maar niet zonder aanpassingen. In 1908/1909 werd een nieuwe ombouw uitgevoerd door Richard Heslop. De tractuur werd vervangen door pneumatiek en de dispositie werd gewijzigd. In april 1909 werd het orgel weer in gebruik genomen.
De kerk is in 1940 zwaar beschadigd geraakt door bombardementen. Het orgel ging daardoor verloren.
