1930 Gebrüder Späth390 restoration and enlargement

  • The large neo-Gothic Marienkirche in Stuttgart was built between 1871 and 1879. Archect was Josef von Egle. The Walcker company built an organ for the church, which was dedicated at the same time as the building on November 12, 1879. The organ had two manuals and a pedal with 25 stops.
  • In 1929 the church celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. The company Gebr. Späth rebuilt the organ for this occasion and expanded it to almost fifty stops. It now had three manuals, a completely new console, and electric action. The renovated organ could be re-dedicated on July 6, 1930.
  • On July 25, 1944, the organ was destroyed by bombing in Stuttgart. After the war, the instrument was dismantled by the Weigle company and removed from the church. However, a restoration turned out to no longer be a realistic option.
