During the First World War, the 1828 Rinkenbach organ of the village church in Gunsbach was badly damaged. This instrument, with one manual and 12 stops, was the organ on which Albert Schweitzer received his first organ lessons from his father. In collaboration with the organ builder Frédéric Haerpfer, Schweitzer designed a new organ for the church corresponded with his ideals. It was dedicated on May 3, 1931. The instrument was built with pneumatic action and cone chests. Parts of the Rinckenbach organ case were reused.
