  • Saint Mary's College of California in Moraga moved to this town in 1928. The College was founded in 1863. At first it was located in San Francisco and from 1889 in Oakland. For the new chapel a second hand pipe organ was acquired from Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco. This organ had originally been built in 1858 by Henry Erben with 37 stops. The organ had been rebuilt by Murray M. Harris in 1902, and since it had 35 stops on three manuals and pedal. In 1928 the organ was transferred to Moraga without modifications, because Calvary Presbyterian had a completely new instrument under construction.
  • The organ was altered and enlarged over the years. As a result the instrument was no longer a unity in style and sound, and the complex action caused many problems in the functioning of the organ.
  • Due to an earthquake of 1989, the buildings of Saint Mary's College needed a serious renovation. Also the chapel was renovated and the organ was rebuilt and enlarged by the Austin Organ Company in 1998-1999. Large parts of the original organ case and the pipework were reused by Austin in 1999. The new organ was dedicated on September 18, 1999, and the inaugurational concert was given on October 2nd, 1999, by David Higgins.
