1824 Diego Cera de la Virgen del Carmen  new organ
1975 Klais Orgelbau1496 restoration

  • The Augustinian friar Diego Cera de la Virgen del Carmen served as a priest in the Philippines. He was of Spanish descent. In 1816 he started building an organ for the church of San José in Las Piñas. The church was still under construction. He completed the instrument in 1824. The wooden pipe work was made of bamboo. There are 832 bamboo pipes and 122 metal pipes (mostly lead). The metal pipes are arranged like a Trompette and Chamade (horizontally).
  • The organ suffered a lot from natural disasters: three earthquakes in 1880 and a typhoon in 1882, followed by violence due to a revolution in 1889. In 1909 the instrument was in bad condition and was almost demolished and replaced. But it remained in the church. Thanks to the efforts of many, the organ could be saved. A restoration project started in 1960.
  • The instrument was then disassembled and shipped to Germany. In the years 1973-1975 the organ was completely restored by the Klais company in Bonn. Part of the pipework has been restored in Japan. For the remainder and the mechanisms, Klais has set up a special room in which the climate of the tropics was simulated. The work was carried out in this room. The organ could be played again on February 18, 1975, and a concert was given in Bonn by Wolfgang Oehms. An LP has also been recorded. From March 13, 1975 the organ was rebuilt in Las Piñas. On 9 May 1975 it was put back into use here during a special service, in which the boys' choir and an orchestra also participated.
