- In 1631 bouwde Robert Dallam een orgel voor Magdalen College Chapel in Oxford. Het instrument werd rond 1655 door Oliver Cromwell naar Hampton Court Palace verplaatst. Hier zou de dichter John Milton het hebben bespeeld, waaraan het orgel de naam The Milton Organ dankt. Rond 1660 kwam het terug naar Oxford, waar Robert Dallam het herplaatste. In 1690 vernieuwde Renatus Harris het instrument. Daarna bleef het in de kapel staan tot 1736, in welk jaar het werd verkocht aan Tewkesbury Abbey. Mogelijk is de kas van het Chaire Organ verplaatst naar Stanford-on-Avon. In 1737 kon orgel in Tewkesbury het in gebruik worden genomen.
- John Holland breidde het in 1796 uit met een Swell Organ, en in 1848 bouwde Father Henry Willis het om. Tenslotte volgde een uitgebreide restauratie met reconstructie in 1948 door de firma J.W. Walker & Sons. Deze reconstructie werd uitgevoerd volgens plannen van de Abbey-organist Huskisson Stubington. In de oude 'Milton'-kast werd het Willis-orgel uitgebreid, terwijl er nieuwe Solo- en Echo-werken werden geplaatst boven de Lady Chapel Apse. Het Grove-orgel, aanwezig in het noordertransept werd ook opgenomen in de nieuwe opstelling, maar werd niet gerestaureerd. Dit instrument bleef onbespeelbaar tot de restauratie in de jaren 1980/1981. Er waren nu twee speeltafels: één met twee manualen en pedaal, behorende bij de oude orgelkas, en een vijfklaviers speeltafel, met mogelijkheid tot bespelen van alle orgels in het koor.
- In 1995 waren er plannen voor een grondige reconstructie van het Milton Organ uit de zeventiende eeuw. Deze plannen zijn in 1996 en 1997 uitgevoerd door Kenneth Jones onder advies van Kenneth Jones. In mei 1997 speelde Kynaston het orgel ook in.
