  • In the earthquake of April 18, 1906, the old Saint Ignatius Church was completely lost. An organ had been built in this church by Hook & Hastings around 1880, but on Christmas Day, 1896, a 4-manual Hutchings & Votey organ with 84 stops was dedicated, the largest organ on the west coast of the United States.
  • A new church was built on the corner of Fulton Street and Parker Avenue after the fire, and was dedicated in 1913. Plans for the construction of a new large organ were canceled due to a lack of finances. The Jesuit Fathers then placed the Kimball organ from their chapel in San José in the church. The originally pneumatic organ had already been electrified by Thomas Whalley. The firm of Schoenstein & Sons transferred the organ to San Francisco, possibly in 1928. The instrument received a new console. Until then, the church had used a temporary 'emergency organ' built by Murray Harris with two manuals. This was sold to Saint Joseph's Church in Mountain View, California. The Kimball organ was placed on a high gallery on the west side of the church.
  • In the years 1965-1967 the instrument was revised by Swain & Kates and expanded with a Trumpet (16', 8' and 4') on Swell and a Plein Jeu 3 ranks (by Laukhuff), also on Swell. It was also relocated to the sanctuary of the church. In October 1967 the organ was inaugurated with a performance by the famous Parisian organist Pierre Cochereau. This conversion was followed by another extensive renovation by Michael McNeil, which was completed in 1989.
