  • The organ in the First Religious Society of Newburyport, a Unitarian Universalist Church, was built in 1834 by Joseph Alley. It replaced a much smaller instrument from 1794, built by Leavitt, that was constructed for the previous church building. The current church dates from 1801. The Leavitt organ was relocated to the Unitarian Church in Easport, Maine, but has been demolished later. The new organ had a classic lay-out, with Great and Swell starting at contra-G with 58 keys (GG-AA-f'''). The original chest of Great is still present, and this work had twelve stops.
  • In 1889 the organ has been rebuilt by George S. Hutchings. He modernized the compass of the pedal and the manuals, starting at C, lowered the pitch to the usual a' = 435 Hz and altered the specification. In 1956-1957, the instrument was rebuilt by the Andover Company. Much of the existing instrument was kept, but a number of stops were replaced or relocated, and some new ranks were added. The pedal compass was enlarged from 27 to 32 notes. The pedal Gedackt 8' came from another organ, and the highest four stops of the pedal are extensions of the Octave 8'. This rank is the original 2nd Open Diapason 8' from Great.
