- Around 1740, Gottfried Silbermann was contacted by the parish of the Katholischen Hofkirche in Dresden for the construction of a new organ. A definitive contract was signed in 1750. Construction started soon after. Gottfried died during construction on August 4, 1753 in Dresden. The work continued under the direction of Zacharias Hildebrandt and under the legal responsibility of Silbermann's cousin Johann Daniel Silbermann. The organ was dedicated on February 2nd, 1755.
- Johann Christian Friedrich Treubluth restored the Vox Humana and the Posaune in 1780. The organ's pitch was already adapted to the orchestral tone in the eighteenth century. In 1822, the organ was restored under the advice of Johann Schneider, organist in Görlitz. In 1883 Jehmlich carried out an overhaul. In 1938 the instrument was brought to a pitch of a' at 440 Hz. Also, the compass of the pedal was increased to f' (30 keys).
- In the Second World War, the interior of the organ was stored at the monastery Marienstern. The bellows and the organ case were lost during the bombing of Dresden in February 1945. But thanks to the saved part and detailed drawings of the case, the organ could be reconstructed after the rebuilding of the church. In 1964 the company Jehmlich started with this work. On May 30, 1971, the organ sounded for the first time after rebuilding.
- The church has been used as a cathedral for the diocese of Dresden-Meißen since 1980. The organ was originally tuned in the Parisian tone (a'= 415 Hz), but during the rebuild it was tuned in the current standard of a' = 440 Hz (as it had been since 1938). In the years 2001/2002 the organ was completely restored by the company Jehmlich in collaboration with Kristian Wegscheider. The wind supply has been rebuilt in its original form. Furthermore, the organ was completely re-voiced.
- It was noted in the Zeitschrift für Instrumentenbau of 1 April 1890 that the organ of the Hofkirche was entirely designed and built by David Schubert, student and master servant of Silbermann, according to a letter from Schubert himself to Friedrich August II of Sachsen.
