Het grote orgel van Carlisle Cathedral werd in 1856 gebouwd door Henry Willis. In het orgel paste Willis veel vernieuwingen toe. In 1875 voegde hij nog enkele registers toe, waaronder de Double Open Diapason 32' op het pedaal. Harrison & Harrison maakten in 1907 een vierde klavier. Het Choir van het orgel werd in 1930 verplaatst vanuit de orgelkas naar het zuidtransept. De firma Walker & Sons bouwden het instrument in 1962 om, waarbij veel pijpwerk volgens klassieke ideeën werd geherintoneerd. Een deel van deze veranderingen is weer ongedaan gemaakt door David Wells in 1997. Bij deze restauratie werd de klank van Willis en Harrison & Harrison weer als uitgangspunt genomen. Ook zijn verschillende stemmen toegevoegd.
