- In Assen, still a small village in this time, the old monastery church was expanded in 1817. In 1818 King William I gave permission for a new organ to be placed in this church, that was in use by the Reformed Congregation. The organ was built by Petrus van Oeckelen and could be dedicated on May 7, 1819 with a play by W.G. Hauff from Groningen. This then completely unknown young organ builder probably did not make it entirely himself. The most obvious thing is that the organ was built by J.W. Timpe. Van Oeckelen has put it together and finished it and added one stop. Already in 1823 the organ suffered serious damage due to leakage of the church roof. The maintenance of the organ was initially in the hands of Matthias Martin, who worked at the company of the widow Freytag. From 1826 it was maintained by Freytag and then by the Lohman company. A new church was built in 1847 and 1848. Despite competition from Lohman and Naber, Van Oeckelen was commissioned to relocate and re-tune the organ. The new church was opened on April 30, 1848, with the organ completely overhauled. The church organist was mr. C. Meyboom, who also played the opening concert.
- The organ turned out to be too small for the new church. Van Oeckelen was commissioned in 1853 to expand it with a second manual. The organ was approved on July 11, 1855. Consultant for this work was mr. S.W. Trip from Groningen. The instrument was examined by mr. S. Meijer, organist of the Nieuwe Kerk in Groningen. The organ was now maintained by Van Oeckelen until 1884. In 1894 it was in poor condition. The church organists also wanted a more modern and larger organ. The Van Dam company built a new organ that was dedicated on October 10, 1896. The old instrument was refurbished and relocated to the Hervormde Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church) of Havelte in 1897.
- Van Dam transferred the organ to Havelte. They renewed the prospect pipes, removed the Flageolet and the Holpijp 8' and modified the Nachthorn 4' to a Quintadeen 8'. On April 18, 1897 the organ in Havelte was taken into use. On the advice of Arie Bouman, things were modified in 1941 by Mense Ruiter. The original Mixtuur was largely renewed, and the ranks were modified.
- The organ has been restored since 1984, in three phases. Van Vulpen restored the wind chest of the main work in 1984. Mense Ruiter restored the pipework of the main work in 1989 and the rest of the organ in 1992. The organ case, which was dark green, was painted white. The restoration also shed new light on the origin of the pipe work. A lot of material is certainly from Freytag. It is therefore likely that Van Oeckelen used largely older pipe work that he might have obtained through Timpe. The completely restored organ was put into use again on November 20, 1992. The restoration was supervised by Onno Wiersma on behalf of the Rijksdienst voor Monumentenzorg (National Service for Monument Care) and Aart van Beek on behalf of the Organ Committee of the Reformed Church. Aart van Beek played the inauguration recital.
- In 2014 maintenance work was carried out by Mense Ruiter. All the action has been restored, the wind chest of the Hoofdwerk was renovated. The bellow was located next to the organ. Mense Ruiter relocated it to the church tower in a new case. To increase the playability the keyboard and the pedalboard were lowered somewhat. The wind pressure was raised. Stef Tuinstra was consultant during the work. He played the opening concert on May 24, 2014.
