Johann Georg Schröter learned organ making from Johann Conrad Vockerod in Berlstedt. He then worked at Lortzing in Ohrdruf and at Sterzings in Eisenach, among others. In 1712 he built his first own instrument in Schallenburg. From this moment on he worked with Johann Freidrich Sterzing (1681-1731). Schröter was not only a good organ builder, but also a shrewd businessman. He acquired the privilege of organ building for the city of Erfurt, used references from Johann Sebastian Bach, among others, to obtain commissions, and did not allow himself to be displaced by other organ makers.
