- The previous organ of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Sacramento was destroyed by fire. In 1914 it was replaced by an instrument by Johnson & Son from 1877. It is one of the oldest organs on the American West Coast. The organ was originally built for the Lutheran Church in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It was first located in an old barn, but was later moved to a new church building. Around 1900 it was sold to Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. In the chapel of this college there was an organ by Johnson from 1863, opus 137. Due to an enlargement of the chapel, which was completed in 1904, a larger organ was desired.
- Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Sacramento was built between 1903 and 1909, replacing an older church, Grace Church from 1849. This church had an organ by John Bergstrom, which was moved to the new church. However, on January 5, 1914, a fire broke out, which largely destroyed the interior of the church. The Bergstrom organ was lost. After the church building was restored, the Johnson organ was purchased from Williams College and moved by Otto Schoenstein. It was put into use on January 10, 1915. Schoenstein had placed the original Bourdon 16' by Swell on the pedal, and replaced it with a Voix Celeste. In order to place the Bourdon, an extra windchest was placed for the pedal with two places. This windchest was made by George S. Hutchings.
- Some more changes were made in 1927. A restoration was carried out by William A. Baker in 1963. The plan to restore the original instrument was not fully completed. In 1996 the work was continued by Mark Austin. The Dolce Cornet of Swell was reconstructed. In the free space on the pedalboard a Violoncello 8' was placed.
