- The Église Notre-Dame in Metz is originally a Jesuit church, built in the seventeenth century. The original organ, dating from 1721, was demolished in 1789, when the monastery was disbanded and the church closed. After the church building was restored, it was put back into use as a parish church a few years later. In 1803 it was possible to buy the old organ from the Sankt Simeonkirche in Trier. This instrument, built in 1730 by Jean Nollet, was transferred by a local carpenter. It was renovated and expanded several times in the course of the nineteenth century.
- In 1902, Charles Mutin was commissioned to build an entirely new organ in the historic organ case. Mutin expanded the case with pedal towers. On August 17, 1903, the organ was inaugurated with a concert by Charles-Marie Widor. In 1927 the Basson of the Positif was altered into a Clarinette by the firm Mürkens. In 1955 Joseph Albert worked on the organ. He replaced the Violoncelle of the pedal with a Flûte 4' and changed the composition of the Plein-Jeu. Fortunately, nothing else was changed. The organ was restored in 1983 by Bernard Aubertin. The Plein-Jeu was changed again. Furthermore, the original Clarinet was re-installed as Basson. On October 9, 1983, the organ was reopened with a concert by Norbert Pétry.
- The statues on the organ were removed a few years ago for restoration. In 2017 they had not yet been relocated, but they were in front of the church.
