Built by: Karl-Joseph Riepp (1763)
Demolished (1982)
Karl-Joseph Riepp completed a new organ for Besançon Cathedral in 1763. The organ was modified by Joseph Callinet in 1820 and 1830. This was followed by further alterations by Nicolas Verschneider in 1866 and by Charles Anneessens in 1898. With this last conversion, the action was reconstructed to pneumatic and the specification was completely adapted to the romantic taste of the time. Georges Schwenkedel carried out an overhaul in 1939. Finally, the instrument was rebuilt in the years 1952-1954 by Erwin Muller. Muller made a new mechanical action. The organ existed in this form until 1982. In that year, the Alfred Kern company built a new organ in the choir of the church, making use of the historic pipework by Riepp, Callinet and Verschneider.
