1938 Emanuel Kemper & Sohn  new organ in old case

  • There was an old organ in the Maria Basilica in Danzig, which was completely converted by Kemper in 1938. This instrument was dismantled and stored during the Second World War to prevent destruction. However, the organ disappeared and has never been found again. The organ had five manuals and was positioned on the west side of the church's nave. The two-manual choir organ on the north-east side of the ship was connected to the console of this main organ, so that both instruments could be played from one location. The organs were dedicated on December 21, 1938. Church organist Konrad Krieschen opened with a work by Bach, after which Günther Ramin played the inaugural concert.
  • Nowadays there is an old four-manual console in the gallery, but it is not from the previous organ in Danzig, but from the old organ of the cathedral in Oliwa (Josef Goebel, 1934-1935).
