A harmonium was in use for a long time in the chapel of the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. This was replaced after 1950 by a second-hand Hammond organ. Because this instrument was not sufficient, under the advice of the organist of the chapel, Mr. R.C. Waters installed a pipe organ. It was built by Hill, Norman & Beard.
