  • Saint Mary's Church in Portsea was built in the years 1887-1889 and was dedicated on October 20, 1889. The company Walker & Sons built a three-manual organ for the church with 38 registers. Consultant was George Clement Martin, organist at Saint Paul's Cathedral in London. The organ was designed with a Solo Organ as the fourth manual, but this was never installed. The fourth manual was removed during a renovation in 1965. The organ was dedicated on October 31, 1892. George Martin played the inaugural concert on November 5, 1892. The front designed by Arthur Blomfield had not yet been installed. The organ case was not completed until 1901. On October 12, 1901, the completed organ was inaugurated with a concert by Hugh Burry.
  • In 1916 a new electric wind motor was installed to replace the original motor, which ran on gas. Furthermore, no changes have been made to the organ. Plans to complete the organ with the Solo Organ were never carried out.
  • A restoration was urgently needed after the Second World War, but was postponed due to the lack of financial resources. In 1962 the Walker firm drew up a plan for a modernization with a new console, a modified disposition and the replacement of the Choir Organ by a Positive Organ. The plans were too expensive, so in the end it was decided to restore the organ as it was. However, a new three-manual console with electro-pneumatic control was installed. The reeds have all been renovated. The instrument was returned to service on July 13, 1965, followed by the official inauguration concert on July 14, 1965, given by the church's organist Frederick Coley.
  • In 1981, the Portsmouth company George Martin & Partner carried out major repairs. On this occasion, the pitch was lowered to a' = 444 Hz. A new Solid-state Piston System has also been installed. Thomas Trotter played the first concert after the renovation on September 23, 1981.
  • In 2020 a project was started to have a major restoration of the organ carried out by the Nicholson company. The work is expected to be completed in 2023. One objective is to restore the organ to its original state, restoring pitch and voicing.
