1943 Toledo Pipe Organ Company  transfer

  • Calvary Presbyterian Church in Detroit was dedicated on November 17, 1918. It was built along Grand River Avenue. In 1943 the Casavant organ from the Orchestra Hall, 3711 Woodward Avenue in Detroit was relocated in the church. This organ was built in 1924 with the nickname 'Murphy Organ', being donated to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra by mr. and mrs. William H. Murphy. Marcel Dupré played the opening concert on March 17, 1924. In 1925 the organ was enlarged with a tuba division by Casavant.
  • Because the Orchestra Hall was left by the orchestra in 1939, the organ became redundant. The transfer to the church was carried out by the Toledo Pipe Organ Company in 1942-1943. On October 24, 1943, the organ could be dedicated, and Arthur Croley played the inauguration recital. The organ was not completely transfered: the 1925 Tuba Division and the Double Open Diapason 32' (Pedal Organ) did not fit, and they were sold to a employee of the Toledo company.
  • Calvary Church was closed in 1991, because the congregation decided to built a new church in a suburb location. The old church was sold, but after a a fire in 2009 became redundant. The building still stands (2018), but is not in use anymore. It's fate will almost certain be demolition. The organ was dismantled in 1992 and stored in the Music House Instrument Museum in Traverse City, Michigan. Only the console is in the exhibition. There are serious plans to restore the organ on its original location in the Orchestral Hall. Since 1989 the Detroit Symphony Orchestra returned to the hall, that is part of the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center since 2003.
  • The stop list is the complete one from 1925, after the Tuba Division was added. In the church this division was not installed, and as mentioned also the Double Open Diapason 32' from the Pedal Organ was not installed in the church. A remarkable thing is that all stops were straight, so no ranks were shared by stops with extensions or transmission, which was quite unusual in large organs of this time.
