- In 1741, John Byfield constructed a new organ for the church of Saint Laurence (or Lawrence) in Reading. The original location of the organ was on a gallery at the west side of the nave. The organ had three manuals with 19 stops (11 on Great, and 4 on Choir and Swell each). John Stanley played the inauguration concert. August Gern renewed the organ in 1882 and relocated it in 1889 to the screen above Saint John's Chapel. A new console was installed on the church floor behind the choir stalls.
- The company Hele & Co. rebuilt the organ in 1900-1903, and the specification was altered. The church was damaged by a bombing raid in 1943. The company Hele & Co. restored the organ after the war.
