Demolished? (1943)

  • The August Gern firm built an organ for Christ Church in Rio de Janeiro in 1892. Still in England, the organ was inspected by Edmund Hart Turpin. Special materials were used during construction that are resistant to the tropical climate.
  • The old Christ Church, originally dedicated to Saint Georg and Saint John Baptist, was built in 1819. The church was closed and demolished after a last service on December 5, 1943. The current church building is in a different location and was built in the years 1942-1944. The church was inaugurated on October 29, 1944. It is not known whether the Gern organ was transferred or not. Photos show an electronic organ, with a front of loudspeakers on the wall. The organ is not mentioned in the dissertation by Dorotéa Machado Kerr from 1985.
