  • The Marienkirche in Stuttgart was severely damaged by bombing in 1944. The organ, built by Walcker in 1879 and expanded in 1929 by Späth, was also badly damaged and could not be repaired. The church building was restored after the war, with the interior in particular being simpler than original.
  • At the beginning of 1954, the Reiser company was commissioned to build a new organ. A four-manual instrument was designed, but initially only two manuals and a pedal were built with thirty stops. The organ was officially put into use on November 13, 1954, when only twelve stops were installed. The rest soon followed and by early 1955 the first phase was completed. The organ was given a facade with an open arrangement of the pipework in a slight arc around the rose window. It was designed by Hugo Schlösser. The console was free-standing and movable.
  • In 1964, Reiser expanded the organ with the planned Brustwerk and several still missing stops, including the pedal reed works. The designed Rückpositiv was never constructed at all, and the Untersatz 32' of the pedal also remained vacant. In 1968, Reiser made some disposition changes on the advice of Hans Böhringer, especially in the composition of some mixtures.
  • From 1990 onwards it became clear that the sound concept and disposition structure of the organ were no longer appreciated. The instrument also suffered from contamination. However, plans for a completely new construction proved to be too expensive. Ultimately, it was decided to rebuild the existing organ with various changes in disposition and structure, voicing and technique. The Reiser company was commissioned again. Advisor on the work was Ludger Lohmann.
  • The work started in the spring of 2001. The organ now has four manuals and a pedal, a new fixed and classically designed console, purely electric action and a more romantic disposition. The organ was put into use again on December 1, 2002. The organ was expanded in 2005 with a Glockenspiel on the Brustwerk.
