- The Johnson & Son company built one of their largest organs for the Church of Saint Mary of the Sacred Heart in Boston, Massachusetts in 1877. The instrument was built with mechanical action, but pneumatic Barker machines were installed for the manuals. In 1927, William Laws revised the organ. He rebuilt the organ with electro-pneumatic action and a new Austin console.
- In 1975 the organ was sold to the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Mankato, Minnesota. Dr. Kim Kasling, professor at Mankato State University, was consultant. The company Richard Lurth & Co. disassembled the instrument in Boston and rebuilt it in Mankato. Nothing was modified during the relocation.
- Round 1990 a restoration was necessary. Lynn Dobson carried out this work, as part of the restoration of the interior of the chapel. In April 1995 the works were completed. A new console was constructed in the style of Johnson. On March 17, 1995, the organ was rededicated with a concert by Tom Murray.
