The interior of the chapel of Exeter College was redesigned in 1860 according to the ideas of Gilbert Scott, inspired by the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. William Hill built an organ for the chapel, the front pipe work of which was also painted to a design by Scott. The organ was expanded with a manual by Hill in 1891-1892. In 1967 Hill, Norman & Beard expanded the organ with a few new stops and the pedal compass was also increased. The original interior of the organ was demolished in 1991. The company Walker & Sons subsequently built a new organ behind the historic facade, which incidentally no longer speaks. The organ was built in the style of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. Construction consultant was David Sanger.
