In 1976, Flentrop built the Benjamin N. Duke Memorial Organ in the chapel of Duke University. It is placed on an organ balcony above the entrance to the chapel and has four manuals and an independent pedal. The contract for the construction was already signed in 1970, but it was not until December 12, 1976, 'Founders Day', that the organ could be put into operation during the morning service. In the afternoon a concert was given by Fenner Douglass, music professor and organist of the university. The organ was designed with the Dutch and French organs from the eighteenth century as a source of inspiration. Both the Hoofdwerk and the Pedal are equipped with a classic French Trompette 8' and a Dutch Trumpet 8'. The organ has a temperament according to a design by Lambert Chaumont from 1695.
