- In 1733-1735 Gottfried Silbermann built a new organ for the Petrikirche in Freiberg. The previous organ of the church had been destroyed by fire. In 1855 Johann Jehmlich tuned the organ in an equal temperament. More than forty years later, in 1896, his sons lowered the pitch by a semitone by advancing the pipework. They also expanded the organ with a third keyboard with five string stops (Dolce 8', Aeoline 8', Violine 8', Flöte Harmonic 4' and Salicet 4') on a pneumatic wind chest, arranged as a Brustwerk. The pedal was given a Subbas 16', the missing pipes for Cis of the keyboards and the pedal were added and finally they replaced the original shift-coupler of the manuals.
- The organ case was restored in 1928. The interior did not follow until 1959. During this restoration, the third keyboard was removed and the old manuals were returned to their original positions. An unequal temperament was laid again. This was not the same as that of Silbermann from 1735.
- In 2006/2007 the organ was completely restored by the firm Jehmlich from Dresden. On July 15, 2007 the instrument was festively used again. During the restoration, the wind supply was reconstructed in the Silbermann style. The organ is since tuned in a Neidhardt temperament.
