  • After a fire in 1733, the church of Saint Jean had completely collapsed. After the rebuilding of the church, Jean-François Lepine was commissioned to build a new organ. He settled in Pézenas, and built an instrument with four manuals and an independent pedal. The case was designed by Vidal, and is inspired by the case of the organ in the St.-Roch in Paris. The ornaments were made by the Morteuil brothers from Toulouse.
  • The most important modifications to the organ were made by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll in 1852-1853 and 1892. He extended the keyboard compass of Récit and Echo, and replaced the Récit in 1892 with an entirely new Récit Expressif. At the Grand-Orgue he replaced the thirds, the Nazard, the Quarte, the Musette and the Voix Humaine with a Flûte Harmonique, Gambas 8' and 4' and a Bombarde 16'. On the Positif he replaced the Tierce, the Larigot, the Doublette and the Cymbal with a Salicional, a Flûte Octaviante and an Octavin. Finally, he also modified the pedal and removed the 'ravellement'.
  • The organ was subsequently overhauled by Maurice Puget. In 1969 the Gonzalez company restored the organ. They replaced a Euphonium 16' with a Bombarde 16', and they placed a new Plein-Jeu 3 rangs and a Tierce to replace defective stops. Daniel Birouste carried out a restoration between 1980 and 1990, restoring the situation of 1892.
