  • The organ at Sherborne Abbey was built in 1856 by Gray & Davison. It had three manuals and an independent pedal with a total of 35 stops. The organ was built with mechanical slider chests. Over time it was amended several times. In 1878 the Sharp Mixture of Great was replaced by a Harmonic Flute, in 1887 the Piccolo of Choir was replaced by an Orchestral Oboe. The Clarion of Great was also removed in favor of a Gamba.
  • A major restoration followed in 1954. In fact, this was more a conversion, carried out by the firm of Walker & Son. The overhaul was completed in 1955. The organ was expanded with several registers, re-voiced, the wind pressure was raised, the Choir Organ was placed in a swell box, the action was replaced by electro-pneumatics and a new free-standing console was installed 25 meters away from the organ. Finally, the manual compass has been increased to five octaves (C-c''''). In 1970 John Coulson carried out another restoration. Some things were repaired, some were modified, such as removing the swell box around the Choir. In fact, he built an entirely new Choir Organ.
  • The organ was completely rebuilt by Kenneth Tickell in 2004/2005 under the advice of Ian Bell. New mechanical mechanisms were installed for the key transmission. A Nave Organ has been built in the nave of the church, which can be played from the main organ.
