1904 Los Angeles Art Organ Company  orgue neuf
1930 Abbott & Sieker  conversion

  • John Wanamaker bought the Louisiana Purchase Exposition organ after the closing of this exhibition. It was played here in a series of fourty concerts by Alexandre Guilmant. The organ was designed by George Ashdown Audsley. The imposing work was then built up in the Grand Court of his Philadelphia department store, where it was first played on June 22, 1911, the day King George was crowned in England. Later, the official commissioning took place at the same time as the opening of the department store, by President Taft. Wanamaker had a workshop set up in the basements of the department store, where forty people led by William B. Fleming devoted themselves to building the organ. The instrument had 140 registers on four manuals when placed.
  • Wanamaker, however, had it enlarged in 1914 and 1917, with a fifth manual placed in the last year. In 1923 an extension followed, and in 1930 a sixth manual and a renovation was done by Abbott & Sieker. The instrument now had 451 stops. There were no less than 964 playing aids. The entire organ is playable from a six-keyboard console, and has 10 works and pedal. There are many other details about the organ to report. Many famous organists played the organ, including Marcel Dupré, Louis Vierne, Enrico Bossi and Alfred Hollins.
  • In 1982, an action started for the completion of the sixth manual. This manual could only be used to play the four Ancillary Divisions. The intention was to build a high pressure division for this keyboard. The Ancillary Divisions can be played on all six manuals.
