- The large organ in the Dom in Riga was built in the years 1880-1883 by the German company Walcker. The history of the instrument, however, begins in 1601, when Jacob Rat built a new organ. It was rebuilt and enlarged in 1777 by Andreas Kontius. Walcker built the current instrument with many parts from the existing organ. The case are also re-used from the old instrument. Walcker placed the new organ on two floors behind the old prospect, but the front pipes remained silent. The organ was given two consoles. The main console was on the top gallery. The organist could use the entire organ behind this. In the lower gallery there was a small console with one keyboard and pedal, with which the Schwellwerk and the Schwellpedal could be used. The organ was ready in the workshop on August 4, 1883. Franz Liszt composed a fantasy about 'Nun danket alle Gott' especially for this organ. It was then shipped to Riga. It was dedicated here on December 30, 1883, during a concert where 3400 people were present.
- Already in 1896 a major modification was carried out. Due to the renovation of the entrance to the church, the lower gallery had to be demolished. The upper gallery was now enlarged, and the entire organ was reloacted on this gallery. The swell and the pedal in the swell box were now connected using pneumatic adtion. In 1907 the swell with the accompanying pedal was placed at the top of the organ. To achieve this, the pedal's layout was also changed. The pedal towers were placed higher. Church and organ were damaged in World War II.
- After the war, a restoration of the building followed, but it was no longer used as a church. The Eule company overhauled the organ in 1961-1962, re-installed the missing pipe work and made sure that it could be played. However, the organ continued to cause many problems, so a thorough restoration was necessary. The company Flentrop restored it from 1980 to 1983, restoring the situation from 1883. At the beginning of 1984 the intonation was also finished, and the large organ could be put into use again in full glory. The official commissioning was on March 8, 1984 with a concert by Hans Steketee and four Estonian organists.
- The organ cases were restored in 2009. These are also provided with new colors and gold leaf.
