Hexham Abbey has had an old organ from Carlisle Cathedral since 1862. This organ was installed by the Nicholson firm. In 1971 it was decided to have a new organ built with full mechanical action. The construction consultant was Donald E. Wright. The American organ builder Lawrence Phelps was commissioned, and the organ was inaugurated in 1974, on the occasion of the 1,300th anniversary of the abbey.
