The organ in the wooden church of Clausthal, built from 1636-1642 and enlarged in 1691, was built in the years 1758 and 1759 by Johann Friedrich Eggert. The organ had 45 stops, three manuals and pedal. The organ case is a work by Johann Albrecht Unger from 1758. It is executed in a rich baroque style.
The old interior of the organ case was replaced in 1888 by a three-manual organ with 40 stops by Franz Eggert from Paderborn. The stop list of this work was prepared by Mr. Häseler from Halberstadt. The organ was equipped with cone chest, pneumatic stop action and mechanical key action. A Barker machine had been installed for the first manual.
In the years 1957-1960, the company Hillebrand from Hannover rebuilt the organ. Using part of the pipework from 1888, this company built an organ with a contemporary stop list with 39 stops. However, as a result of the heating of the church, this organ soon became unplayable. It was decided to have a completely new organ built in the old organ case by Paul Ott. It was built in 1975-1976.
In 2019 a plan was made to replace the Ott-organ with a completely new instrument. The design was closed in 2020, and the organ has been built by Orgelbau Goll in 2020-2022. The new organ has four manuals and pedal, with 74 stops. The Tuba Mirabilis is a high pressure rank, that can be played from every manual and the pedal by choice. The instrument was dedicated on November 27, 2022. Arno Janssen played the inaugurational concert.
