On July 8, 1923, the new organ of the Sint Elisabethkerk in Rotterdam was dedicated. The instrument was built by the company Verenigde Kerkorgelfabrieken (United Church Organ Factories) from Aalten. The instrument was badly damaged during a bombing raid on 3 October 1941. It was restored in 1942. At this occasion, the Violine 4' was replaced with a Terts 1 3/5'. In the following years, a few other stops have been replaced: the Vox Caelestis 8', Aeoline 8' and Dolce 8' from Swell by Quintfluit 1 1/3', Scherp 4 ranks and Prestant 4'.
After the closure and demolition of the old cathedral church of Rotterdam in 1968, the Sint Elisabethkerk was consecrated as the new cathedral. The church was rededicated to Sint Ignatius and Sint Laurentius. In 1997 the company Adema-Schreurs started with a restoration and extension of the organ. The old specification was largely restored, and a third manual was added. On June 26, 1998 the organ was dedicated again.
In 2020 the company Adema started a major restoration of the organ. The first phase was the replacement of the console. The new console is constructed with a wireless technology, and it can freely be moved on the organ gallery. The console was installed in the church in March and April 2021. But as a result of melting snow on the roof of the church, water came inside the organ, and much damage has been done. A part of the organ is unplayable, and will be restored in a second phase of the restoration.
This restoration was carried out by Adema in 2021-2024. A new windchest has been made for Swell, new bellows have been installed for Positive and Swell and all the pipework and mechanisms have been restored, as well as the windchests of the pedal. A new swell box has been made. The disposition of Swell has been expanded with three overblowing flutes (2 2/3', 2' and 1 3/5'). The Vox Humana has been replaced by a new French stop. A slide has been reserved for a Klaroen Harmoniek 4'. Finally, the Fagot 16' and Bourdon 16' can be used on the pedal via transmissions. The organ was put back into use on March 21, 2024.
