Thomas Prentiss Sanborn learned his skills while working at the company E. & G.G. Hook. In 1874 he started a new company in Indianapolis, together with William Horatio Clarke and Stephen P. Kinsley. Around 1881 Clarke left the company. From that time until his retirement in 1901, Thomas Sanborn built organs from Indianapolis on his own name.
