In 1960 Manfred Mathis (1927) started an organ workshop in Näfels in the Swiss canton of Glarus. He learned the trade from various organ builders, among others in Ghent and Paris. From the start, Mathis concentrated on classically built organs with mechanical action, closed organ cases and a clear work division. His son Hermann Mathis took over management of the company after Manfred's retirement.
