The organ builder Emil Wirell was born on November 12, 1872 in Virestad as Ernst Emil Carlsson, son of the organ builder Carl Johannes Carlsson (1829-1896). He took over the workshop after his father's death. Before 1903 his surname was changed to Wirell. He died on May 27, 1939 in Växjö, where his organ workshop had been located since 1922.
